cubanaverysteam1.jpgThe Dallas Mavericks fired head coach Avery Johnson today, the first of what’s likely to be many offseason moves after the team with the league’s highest payroll again flopped in the first round of the playoffs.

Johnson leaves his office with Dallas with an impressive run after three-plus seasons, but Mavs owner Mark Cuban couldn’t tolerate two straight years of first-round exits. We should also note for statistical sake that the  Dallas Mavericks have gone 3-12 in the playoffs since blowing a 2-0 game lead in the 2006 NBA Finals against Miami.

“It is never easy to relieve a coach of his duties, especially one of Avery’s caliber,” Cuban said in a statement. “He is a talented coach and I want to thank him for his efforts over the last four years and what he has done for this franchise.”

Im unsure if it was Avery pushing for the controversial Kidd trade late in the season but Dallas was 16-13 after Kidd arrived — 17-17 counting the playoffs. They were 35-18 before giving up young point guard Devin Harris and a package of players and picks for the veteran superstar.

So anyway, Avery Johnson is out and but who will Marc Cuban toss in the hot seat? My suggestion would be for him to try his hand at coaching! Maybe Cuban will be interested in Mike D’Antoni ?
