Blaze Endorsement: How I Would Run the Nuggets
Obviously, I’ve been complaining about some past moves by Denver. So I’m going to post exactly what I would try and do with the roster this off-season. First, the Nuggets need to move Allen Iverson’s expiring contract. The Bucks have taken a win now approach, so I believe they would add Iverson just because of his name.
Trade 1: Allen Iverson for Mo Williams, Charlie Villanueva, and Desmond Mason
Villanueva is on the trading block, and both Villanueva and Mason are expiring contracts. Plus this gives the Nuggets what they need at point guard.
Trade 2: Marcus Camby for Shane Battier, Steve Francis, and Steve Novak
The Rockets will hate to part with Battier, but off Yao’s injury they would have a hard time turning down the former defensive player of the year. The Rockets can do this, because they still have Chuck Hayes on the roster. Plus, they can go out and sign or trade for another wing. You have to give up something to get something, and for the Rockets they’d have to give up Shane Battier. On the plus side the other two contracts really don’t factor into their team next year. Francis is an expiring contract.
Trade 3: Nene for John Salmons and Shelden Williams
Williams will make a decent backup PF/C, but he was a bust as the 5th pick in the draft. Nene’s value is low again because he is coming off cancer, but whenever Nene’s name come up in trades teams are always interested in him. Nene is a legit power forward or center, and teams still drool over his past performances. The Nuggets could really use John Salmons.
After the trades the Nugget’s roster should now look like this.
C- Kenyon Martin
PF- Charlie Villanueva
SF- Carmelo Anthony
SG- Shane Battier
PG- Mo Williams
6th man- John Salmons
Rotation- Anthony Carter, Shelden Williams, Desmond Mason, Steven Hunter, Chucky Atkins, Sonny Weems, Eddie Najera, Linas Kleiza, JR Smith?, Taurean Green?, Steve Novak (waived?), Bobby Jones? Yakhouba Diawara?
Waive: Steve Francis
I have no idea if the Nuggets are going to bring back JR Smith, but they should consider some sign and trade deals. I personally like JR’s game, but this guy still plays zero defense. Kleiza is going to get big money next summer, so the Nuggets should shop him as well. I could see some contracts going to Indiana to pick up Jamaal Tinsley as the backup point guard. I’d of course like to get Kenyon Martin traded, but his contract is a little difficult to trade. Well, at least he showed up and played last year. These suggestions clearly aren’t the only trades that should be done, but this would be a good start. I know I suggested a lot of trades, but they need to be done. The Nuggets are at a critical transition this summer.
