While Peja Stojakovic was draining threes in the NBA, Bojan Malesevic was promoted from the junior/cadet team to Beopetrol Beograd in Serbia. Unfortunately this was also the year the United States was forced to intervene militarily in Serbia. Despite the turmoil of war Malesevic persevered to become a professional basketball player known across Europe and the Middle East as “King of the Assist”.
Bojan is fluent in 4 languages as has played professionally in eight different countries. In 2003-04 he played in the Russian Superleague for Ekaterinburg averaging 9.9 points per game, 7.5 assists per games, 4.5 rebounds per game, and 2.1 steals per game. For the 2004-05 season Malesevic played in the Baltic League in Riga, Latvia. He averaged 11 points per game, 9.8 assists per game, 5.3 rebounds per game, and 2.6 steals per game. In 2005-06 Bojan set a Polish League record for assists in a single game with 18. The following year Bojan played in Iran and Georgia. The past two seasons Bojan was named to the first team of both leagues, and he led both teams to championships. Last season Bojan started at point guard for Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia. He averaged 17 points per game, 11.8 assists per game, 6.3 rebounds per game, and 2.9 steals per game.
Bojan lists at 6’7” and 225lbs (point guard) which aids his excellent court vision. He is known as the best pure playmaker in Europe and Asia. In an up-tempo game like the NBDL or NBA Bojan would thrive as a playmaker and make the game easier for his teammates. The one question mark might be how well Bojan can defend NBA players; however, his height allows him to play loose on the perimeter when compared to an average sized point guard. Malesevic has a nose for the ball and is known as a pickpocket in Europe and Asia. Can he do the same in the NBA or the NBDL?
At the age of 27, Bojan Malesevic has made the decision to pursue his dream of playing in the NBA and is in the process of signing a new agent here in the USA. The next step for Bojan will be to sign an NBDL contract before the draft. Occasionally an amazing talent slips through the cracks. “Males” might just be that diamond in the rough NBA teams are looking for. One thing is for sure, a 6’7” playmaker is hard to find.
