The USBL is a spring basketball league that has suspended operations for this year. The league is having financial issues and is likely done. Gordon Kasparson is the owner of the Kansas Cagerz in Salina Kansas (central Kansas). The Cagerz play in a gym that seats over 7,200 fans, and I believe they did have pretty decent attendence for a USBL team. Kasparson does not plan for the team to be back in the USBL and he has stated that he wishes to no longer own the team.

I found this news to be interesting, but I really don’t see much value in the Cagerz. That and a owner could go into Salina and start an IBL team without paying Kasparson a dime, so I am just trying to gauge his thought process. I suppose the logo and team name do have value, so maybe the rights to those are worth a little cash (but not much). Salina would be a long drive to the Chicago area, and it would be even longer to Indiana and Michigan. Without other teams in Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri, Arkansas, and Colorado, I really don’t see Salina joining the IBL any time in the near future. I just wanted to inform everyone about this news, but personally I don’t think Salina would be the best location for an IBL franchise.

Since I’m blogging on the midwest at the moment, I figure I’d mention a new location I haven’t discussed. Dubuque, Iowa is located within driving distance to the other Midwest Division IBL teams. Again, I think OMT should go overseas, but if they decide to play in the Midwest Dubuque would probably be a good location. The county has a population of around 100,000 people and there are many surrounding towns. Dubuque has a a D2 college and a junior hockey league, but in the spring they don’t have much going on. Dubuque also has an old convention center downtown, and I belive an IBL team could get really good rates. The convention center could also sell tickets to the event. The Five Flags Convention Center seats 5,200 for basketball events.
