The Life of an International Basketball Star
Linked below is a Seattle Weekly article that focuses on life and basketball overseas. The article focuses on an interview with former McDonald’s All-American Rosell Ellis. Ellis was likely on his way to the NBA before he put an IBA ref in a sleeper hold in front of several NBA scouts in Des Moines, Iowa. This was shortly after the Sprewell incident, so NBA scouts and minor league basketball teams shunned Ellis. Ellis is a hard working international player with a stellar reputation. Ellis snapped one time and after the incident his chances to play in the NBA died forever. At 32, Ellis has matured and become a standout player in several international leagues.
The article outlines the craziness of basketball in the Philippines. Ellis was once flashed by a transvestite who recently had a breast augmentation procedure. The article also focuses on former Portland Trail Blazer Billy Ray Bates. Bates left the NBA due to his serious problems with alcohol. In the Philippines Bates was given the nickname “Black Superman”, because of his ability to put up Wilt Chamberlain numbers both on and off the court (if you know what I mean).
This is a great article with a lot of interesting information about basketball in Asia. Visit the link below to read more.
