What a difference ten years can make on the internet
I find it fascinating how the internet and the world of getting your site ‘out there’ has changed over the years. I remember back ten years ago when I first took my entrepreneurial skills to the internet. Back then I can still remember the feeling expressed by most at the time, ‘if you build it, they will come’. It was generally thought that if your brick and mortar business created a web site, people would automatically come and buy. That’s pure science fiction fantasy in today’s internet.
I went downstairs to find where i packed away all of my old business information, taxes and what not to see if i could find some info about my old company. I was shocked that I found a few pages fairly quickly. I had scratched a note at the top of the page, ‘Google has over 1.1 billion pages indexed’. I jumped over to Google to see if I could find how many pages they advertise as listing now. Unfortunately either they do not list it or I couldn’t find the proper place to find that information. As a test I went over to google and searched for term ‘A’ just to see what may come back and to my surprise over 15 billion pages indexed. This is of course is an unscientific experiment but I believe its safe to say that the internet and the pages indexed by Google have increased at a minimum of ten fold over the course of the last ten years.
Further down my note I saw where i had written things that I had read from so called ‘guru’s’ of the time:
Meta Description
Meta Keywords
Page Titles
Submit to all of the search engines
Key Phrases in top of my page.
I remember writing down my action plan and working on the above steps everyday. Of course back then every page was designed by itself by hand. But when I compare that previous list to bullet list of items that the current crop of search engine experts write about online, the list pales in comparison in numbers and sophistication.
Web site Optimized
Need link popularity
Google Page rank
Keyword research
Keyword Optimization
Site maps
Analytics
Blog on others sites
Anchor text
Exchanging links
Organic links
Black Hat
White Hat
Gray Hat
SEO Scams
Buying strategic advertising
Press Releases
Seo friendly design
Search Engine Friendly URLS
Robot.txt

Ten years ago, I think a guy could almost run his business as well as take care of the things he needs to try and help his web site gain popularity in the search engines and across the internet. Now it seems you almost need help to tackle different SEO projects as you concentrate more on running your business. This thing they call the internet is now ultra competitive. I look back at my first internet business which was very successful at the time, and I ponder about how I would do today if I was to try and start fresh today. In short, i’m unsure if i could do it on a bootstrap.
So here we are at OwnMyTeam.com beginning our journey onto the internet with a grand idea, lots of patience, experience and gumption just waiting for someone to catch hold of our idea and help us spread it like a virus on the internet. I woke up this morning to a ‘Google Alert’ I had setup for OwnMyTeam and noticed that we had made Google News under the term ‘fantasy sports’. The story was linked from the Los Angeles Chronicle. This could be the beginning of the virus, we hope! Another positive has been our association with Bryan at NegativeOptimism. He has been guiding, assisting and helping this ship on its journey. His help has been invaluable in getting us to where we are so far, and we cannot wait to see where he helps take us at the end.
