Will Denver Use Trade Exception?
By making the Marcus Camby trade the Nuggets got a 10.1 million dollar trade exception out of the deal. The Nuggets must use this by July 14, 2009 to take advantage of it. The Nuggets can redeem themselves if they use this exception wisely. Who would be interested in this? The New Jersey Nets are one example. Here is one trade possibility
Nuggets Send- 10.1 million trade exception, Nene, Linas Kleiza, Taurean Green, future first round draft pick
Nets Send- Vince Carter, Stromile Swift, Marcus Williams
The Nets have coveted Nene for several years now, and Kleiza would also be a key piece in the deal. The Nuggets have an extra 1st rounder because they traded this year’s pick off, so they could include that in the deal. Stromile Swift is an expiring contract for the Nuggets. The Nets would get Nene, Kleiza, a first round pick, and save 10 million dollars. This is a win/win for both teams. Vince Carter and Melo would be an interesting pair, but I will admit I believe his skills are on the decline. It would take a lot more than Melo and Carter to get the job done in the West.
Another avenue the Nuggets could pursue is to deal with the OKC “Whatevers”. They certainly would covet that 10.1 million dollar trade exception. The Nuggets could send Chucky Atkins and the trade exception for Luke Ridnour and Nick Collison. This trade would redeem the Nuggets (especially if Camby has injury issues next season). The Nuggets could use both players next season and the former Sonics would love the cap flexibility.
On top of this the Nuggets could trade AI to the Cavs for a bunch of expiring contracts. Packaging AI with KMart would save the Nuggets a ton of money, and the Cavs are desperate enough to do this because they are being held hostage by Lebron James (free agent, 2010). The Nuggets could trade AI and KMart for Wally Szczerbiak, Eric Snow, Damon Jones, and Joe Smith. All of those contracts from Cleveland are expiring.
