Your NBA MVP Is Kobe Bryant and here is why
First of all, let me state that I am not one who gets an actual vote on the NBA’s postseason MVP award, but if I had a vote, mine would be going to Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant this season.
Yes I’m saying it outloud….I’ve been thinking about writing this blog for about two weeks, but honestly i’ve been torn between Kobe and New Orleans Hornets point guard Chris Paul. I held off writing, hoping to not only watch as many games as I could, but also to hope that one would falter or go on an incredible run.
For me, it ended up coming down to: IT’S KOBE’S TIME. It was very hard to type that, and everyone who knows me, knows i’ve been very critical of Kobe over his career in the NBA. Chris Paul has been absolutely incredible this season, breaking out and helping raising the Hornets from a team that wasn’t in the playoff picture last year to a team that is sitting around the top of the powerful Western Conference. This is a conference that could have a few 50 win teams not even make the playoffs!
I can see emails coming now yelling about the Celtics Kevin Garnett, but I cant get past the point that he has the help of two other all-stars on his team. Lebron James has put up mind blowing numbers this year and has carried the Cavs on his ill back all season long but his team hasn’t had a great season.
Some like Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic. They make the argument that there is no way the Magic would be sitting on top of the Southeast Division and with the #3 seeding in these playoffs. In my mind its not Dwight’s time, its not Paul’s time, yet. All of these players deserve the discussions they are getting, and quite frankly I wouldn’t be disappointed if either of them won the MVP, but I certainly expect Bryant to win the trophy this season.
When you go to NBA.com and try and research the actual criteria for the MVP award you will be hard pressed to find anything. Is it the player who is the most important to his team winning? Is it the best player in the league? Is it the best stats in the league? What exactly is it ?
Kobe’s Lakers has had to endure more injuries than Paul’s Hornets, which i may add has been very healthy this season and part of the reason the Hornets are where they are. Bryan has appeared to finally be comfortable with his teammates and trust in them enough to default part of his game for his team. He has dropped to second in scoring in the league behind Lebron James, at the same time Bryant is now in the top 20 in the NBA in assists (I’m not lying!). And is there another player in this league that you would hand the ball over to with the game on the line with 5 seconds left?
Kobe has some black marks on his wonderfully resume, and I’m sure there are plenty of sports writers out there that will take advantage of it because they don’t like him very much. There is a real chance he will not win the award this year, but if it was up to me, there is no question who would win it, its just his time!
